Traditional Barolo from one of Piedmont's most revered family estates. The Rinaldis purchased the Boschis farmhouse atop Cannubi in 1870; Giuseppe established the separate estate in the 1920s with a first vintage in 1921. "Beppe" Rinaldi (3rd generation) took over in 1988. 6.1 hectares total, 3.8 hectares Nebbiolo. Brunate-Le Coste blend: 85% from Brunate (230-400 meters, southeast, Tortonian marls), 15% from Le Coste. Fermented one month in tall oak vats with indigenous yeast. 42 months in large Slavonian casks. No chemicals—only manure for fertilizer.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2011 Barolo Brunate has finally begun to awaken from its post-bottling slumber. Surprisingly open for a young Rinaldi Barolo, the 2011 is round, spherical and supple. Leather, smoke, menthol and tobacco wrap around a plump, juicy core of dark Brunate fruit. The 2011 is almost shockingly accessible. The breadth and creaminess of Brunate is evident, but at the same time, the Brunate is also clearly marked by the ripeness of the vintage. It will be interesting to see if the pedigree of Brunate comes to the fore with further time in bottle. At this point, the Barolo Tre Tine is fresher and better balanced." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2011 Barolo Brunate shows dazzle and pizzazz with a good sense of density and structure at the back. Its tight, svelte texture wraps smoothly over the palate. Bright aromas of cherry, dark fruit, balsam herb, rosemary oil, cola and crushed mineral appear with clear definition and energy. Because of the warm vintage, this wine went into bottle six months earlier than average to allow for a longer evolution in glass." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Classic notes of rose, cherry, licorice and tar are the hallmarks of this firm yet succulent red. Fine harmony and excellent length, along with the solid structure, should allow this red to develop nicely over the next 10 to 12 years."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"This beautiful wine opens with aromas of ripe dark berry, scorched earth, mint, menthol and a balsamic note. The vibrant palate boasts juicy red cherry, black raspberry, sweet pipe tobacco, baking spice, grilled herb and a hint of game. It's still young and nervous, with tightly wound but refined tannins and firm acidity. Give it time to fully develop. Drink 2020–2031." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
