A Brunate from Beppe Rinaldi's own years at the helm, from one of Barolo's great crus and one of its most traditional addresses. Beppe believed in blending sites, as Bartolo Mascarello did. When EU labeling rules forced compromises, the house's Brunate became 85% Brunate, with the rest coming from Le Coste. So the old idea lives on under a single-cru name. The vineyard climbs from 230 to 400 metres on Tortonian marls. Nothing cosmetic happens in the cellar. Out in the vineyards there are no chemicals, only manure. Beppe died in 2018, and his daughters now run the estate, Marta making the wine and Carlotta farming. That gives a bottle from his own time real weight: give it a long, unhurried decant and pour it for people who'll pay attention.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2012 Barolo Brunate is powerful and dense in the glass, but also quite expressive for such a young wine. Dark, and brooding, with fabulous mid-palate richness and depth, the 2012 packs a serious punch. Readers will find a Barolo that brings together a slightly slender, cool-climate sense of structure with good early approachability, all of which make the 2012 quite appealing even in its youth. A blast of sweet red cherry, plum, licorice, leather and spices leaves a strong and lasting impression." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2012 Barolo Brunate was a bit closed when I tasted it. This wine's ideal drinking window is a long ways away and the bottle needs another decade of cellar aging before it starts to show its best side. The bouquet offers hints of ripe fruit with dark cherry and blackberry at the front. Those fruity tones are followed by mild tobacco, cola and grilled herb. True to the vineyard site, the Barolo Brunate offers a more profound sense of depth and structure at the back. The mouthfeel is robust and generous." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

"Subdued nose hinting at leafy cherry and a touch of leather. Super-elegant palate and fragrant fruit with a firm core of tannins. Burgundian in style. Gripping, grainy finish with perfumed fruit."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"A mix of sour cherry, raspberry, spice and tobacco leaf flavors highlights this light-footed, silky red. Firmly structured, with a lining of dusty tannins on the lingering finish. Ripe yet fresh."

Kerin O'Keefe

96 points

"Multifaceted aromas of rose, iris, leather, cranberry, truffle and the barest hint of game lead the nose. The radiant palate offers creamy strawberry, ripe red cherry, orange zest, baking spice, dried herb and tobacco alongside firm but polished tannins. Fresh acidity provides balance while a mineral vein energizes the finish. With its smooth texture, it’s already tempting but hold for even more complexity. Drink 2018–2026." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised beef cheeks, tajarin with ragù, roast guinea hen, truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Barolo profile: red cherry, roses and tar, with dried herbs, tobacco and earthy notes coming through as it opens up. Brunate typically makes a firm, structured Nebbiolo, medium in weight but powerful, with lively acidity and grippy tannins, finishing long and savoury. It's built to age and rewards patience and plenty of air.
