Brunate Le Coste is Giuseppe Rinaldi's masterwork—a blend from two of Barolo's most revered crus, vinified together in the traditional way that defined the estate for generations. The 1998, a warm and generous vintage, shows distinctive Rinaldi delicacy: almost Burgundian in its mid-weight structure, supple and silky with bright citrus, plums, and fresh, tangy fruit. After over twenty-five years, this mature wine is at its zenith—a quiet reminder that true Barolo is about finesse, not force.

Antonio Galloni

"The 1998 Barolo Brunate is wonderfully open-knit and seductive. It doesn’t have the overt richness of truly warm years like 2007 or 1997, but it is much more approachable than the 1996. Those qualities have made the 1998s quite appealing since they were first released. Rinaldi’s 1998 is a gorgeous example of the vintage at its best." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Extremely high acidity as well as astringent tannin make this a difficult effort to evaluate. The color is a dark plum with amber at the edge. The closed nose reveals hints of tar, rose petal, cherries, and tobacco. The attack is elegant, but the high acidity and tannin combine to compress the mid-palate and finish. There may be more behind the acidity and tannin than I was able to determine, but this closed 1998 needs 4-5 years of cellaring to display its full potential. An austere style for sure, I am not sure the fruit will ever be able to overcome the wine's structural components." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
