A blend that no longer exists, from one of the great Barolo vintages of the 2000s. Beppe Rinaldi was a fierce believer in blending sites in a region obsessed with single vineyards, and Brunate–Le Coste was his statement: Brunate, one of the very few vineyards every authority ranks at the top, running from 230 metres up to a 400-metre crest on blue-grey marl and facing due south thanks to a fold in the slope, joined with Le Coste, the family's warm, thin-soiled backyard cru just south of the village of Barolo. EU labeling rules later forced the estate to split them apart, so bottles like this are the last word on how the house wanted the wine to taste. Everything here is old-school: fermented with natural yeasts in open-top wooden vats for 25 days with no temperature control, then 42 months in Slavonian oak and bottled unfiltered. Rinaldi has always been near-impossible to find because the estate sells mostly to private individuals rather than the trade. Stand it upright well ahead of time and decant gently off the sediment.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2005 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste is a bit more open than the Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera, but that openness manifests itself in aromatics that are starting to show signs of development. The tannins remain forbidding, which leads me to believe the 2005 will never be fully in balance. More importantly, there is a mustiness in the aromatics that is either a less than perfect cork or barrel. I have never found the 2005 to be an especially engaging wine by Rinaldi standards. My most recent tasting has done nothing to change that." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

"Lovely broad, spicy fruit aromas with notes of seasoned leather and clove. Massive sweet, rich palate and fine tannins. Ethereal aromas to finish."

Wine Enthusiast

89 points

"Here is a rich and expressive Barolo (with fruit sourced from the celebrated Brunate Le Coste cru) that focuses squarely on fruit and floral aromas. There are tiny background shadings of clove and exotic spice that bring up the rear and the wine's mouthfeel is polished and tight."

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
