Forty-five years on, from one of Barolo's most uncompromising traditionalists. Giuseppe Rinaldi's Brunate Riserva was reserved for only the greatest vintages and held ten years before release — and this 1980 bottle, like its 1985 sibling, predates the 2010 MGA regulation that forced Rinaldi to abandon the blending of Brunate and Le Coste under one label. Pure Brunate from La Morra, made in the heart of the Battista Rinaldi era (Beppe took over in 1992 after his father's death). The 1980 vintage was modest by Piedmont standards, but four-plus decades of patient cellar age have settled the wine into the place library Barolo wants to live: fragile, perfumed, tertiary, with all the trace evidence of the traditionalist hand. A cult bottle for the deepest collectors.

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Treat it with reverence: a sliver of aged Castelmagno, brodo with tajarin, a slow-roasted capon, or simply quiet contemplation with bread and butter. Nothing forceful.

Tasting Profile

Ghostly and fully tertiary. Dried rose petal, potpourri, sweet tobacco, dried cherry skin, forest floor, orange peel. Tannins fully resolved; the wine is now perfume. Fragile.
