Pure Brunate from the Battista Rinaldi era (Beppe took over in 1992 after his father's death — the 1985 vintage was made by Battista), 40 years on. Giuseppe Rinaldi was — alongside Bartolo Mascarello — the uncompromising standard-bearer of traditional Barolo, and his Brunate Riserva was made only in the very greatest vintages and held back ten years before release. Crucially, this 1985 predates the 2010 MGA regulation that forced Rinaldi to stop blending Brunate with Le Coste under a single label: this bottle is pure Brunate from one of La Morra's most celebrated crus. The 1985 vintage was warm and generous, and four decades of cellar age have brought it fully to rest — undergrowth, dried cherry, dusty soil, sweet tobacco. A cult library bottle of the first order, and a benchmark for what classical Barolo can become.

Antonio Galloni

"Medium red. The Rinaldi appears to be more evolved, with suggestions of leather and tobacco on the nose. It is an accessible wine that offers notable concentration in its rich, ripe red fruit flavors and soft, velvety texture, with an indescribably beautiful, ethereal finish that makes me want to taste this again and again. Perhaps fooled by this wine's super-rich, sweet fruit, I guessed this to be a modern Barolo…and I was not alone. One of the most surprising and enjoyable wines of the night." —Antonio Galloni

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Sacred-cellar territory: brasato al Barolo, brodo with delicate tajarin, white truffle on absolutely anything, or simply aged Castelmagno and a quiet hour. Restraint flatters this wine.

Tasting Profile

Fully mature, deeply tertiary. Undergrowth, dried cherry, dusty soil, sweet tobacco, dried rose, leather. Tannins long since silk; lifted, savory, ghostly, endless on the finish.
