Under Battista Rinaldi the estate bottled a single-vineyard Brunate Riserva only in the vintages he judged great, giving it years in cask before release; when his son Beppe took over in 1992 he retired the Riserva for good and moved to the blended cuvées the domaine is known for today. That makes 1989 one of the last Brunate Riservas Rinaldi ever made, from what is still counted among the finest Piedmont vintages of the 1980s. Brunate — the celebrated cru straddling La Morra and Barolo — gives the most structured, longest-lived wine in the Rinaldi cellar, and the winemaking never wavered: spontaneous fermentation in old wooden vats with no temperature control, then a long stay in large Slavonian botti. This bottle comes from a private cellar rather than from the producer. At close to forty years old it is fully mature: well-kept examples are drinking beautifully right now, though they are unlikely to gain anything from more waiting. Open it a few hours ahead, stand it up first, and pour it for people who will notice.

"Rinaldi’s 1989 Barolo Riserva Brunate, from my cellar, is magnificent. Sweet rose petal, savory herbs and melted road tar are some of the super-classic scents that open up in the glass. Still resonant and exquisitely layered, the 1989 will drink beautifully for many years to come. After a run of bad luck with the 1989, my most recent bottles have been deeply satisfying, as this one is." —Antonio Galloni

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
