From one of Barolo's most elusive producers—who sells primarily to private individuals rather than the trade, making large lots nearly impossible to source. Giuseppe "Beppe" Rinaldi represents an almost extinct model of the true artisan winemaker. Open-top wooden vats, natural yeasts, no temperature control, 25-day fermentation, 42 months in Slavonian oak, bottled without filtration. The Brunate cru in La Morra expresses elegant yet structured Nebbiolo with distinctive perfume. 92 points, darker fruit profile with muscular, dense personality. These wines demand patience but reward it extraordinarily.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2005 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste is a bit more open than the Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera, but that openness manifests itself in aromatics that are starting to show signs of development. The tannins remain forbidding, which leads me to believe the 2005 will never be fully in balance. More importantly, there is a mustiness in the aromatics that is either a less than perfect cork or barrel. I have never found the 2005 to be an especially engaging wine by Rinaldi standards. My most recent tasting has done nothing to change that." —Antonio Galloni

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
