Bussia is Barolo with its shoulders back. Monforte d'Alba's most storied hillside makes Nebbiolo built on muscle — darker fruit, deeper tannin, a longer runway — and in Rinaldi's hands that power gets handled the old way: native ferments, long macerations, and aging in large old Slavonian casks, with nothing new-oaky anywhere in the picture. Expect black cherry and dried herbs, licorice, iron and crushed rock, wrapped in tannins that mean business. The 2021 season was classic and cool-edged in Piedmont, so there's lift and precision here alongside the weight. This is a cellar wine, plain and simple. If you can't wait, decant it early and pour it next to something braised.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2021 Barolo Bussia is a classy, elegant wine that shows all the dynamic energy that is typical of this district. Spice, leather, incense and dried flowers come alive in the glass, framed by youthful, grippy tannins that lend shape and dimension. Dense and layered, with fine balance, the Bussia is terrific in the early going." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

95 points

"The Rinaldi family had the fortune to rent a 1ha plot in Bussia Sottana in 2019 before purchasing it outright in 2022. The vines are already a mature 40-plus years old and have long been cultivated according to organic practices. It is the densest and most texturally rich of the lineup, yet still with the estate’s lifted lilt and tactful touch. Rosemary-inflected wild cherry and chinotto radiate from the grounding mineral core. Long, finessed tannins slink seductively and confidently across the palate, culminating with a gratifying bite. Hints of bitter chocolate appear on the finish."

Wine Spectator

97 points

"A pretty red, this boasts cherry raspberry, blood orange, rose and mineral aromas and flavors. The stealthy structure builds as this unfolds and expands on the vibrant aftertaste, where savory elements of wild herbs emerge. Super harmony and length. Best from 2028 through 2050."

Kerin O'Keefe

97 points

"Sun warmed hay, botanical herb and wild berry aromas come to the forefront. Firmly structured, the palate is youthfully austere, featuring cherry, tobacco, crushed mint and star anise accompanied by firm, fine-grained tannins and a backbone of bright acidity. Drink 2031–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
