A quarter-century-old Barolo from Cannubi, one of the appellation's most historic hillsides, made by one of its most legendary traditionalist cellars. Beppe Rinaldi's whole argument was that blending sites captures the soul of Barolo better than isolating a single plot, and this cuvée built around Cannubi's bluish-gray marls is that conviction in a bottle. Nothing modern happens at this address. It was fermented in oak tini with no temperature control, about a month on the skins, then aged in large botti. In other words, there's no new-oak makeup and no shortcuts, only Nebbiolo and time. This is a genuine back-vintage bottle, so stand it upright well ahead of time, decant it gently and pour it for people who will pay attention.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Medium red. Rather rustic, dusty aromas of red berries and tar. Sweet on entry, then soft and smooth in the middle, with more fat and better early balance than the Brunate bottling. Finishes with nicely ripe tannins and less dryness than the Brunate. In the heat of 2000, says Rinaldi, the Ravera vines, which had greater reserves of water and thus suffered little hydric stress, produced outstanding fruit of more thorough ripeness than in most years." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with shaved white truffle, braised beef in Barolo, roast leg of lamb with rosemary, porcini risotto, aged Castelmagno

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditionalist Barolo profile: red cherry, dried flowers and tar, with long skin contact and large botti keeping new-oak vanilla out of the picture. With bottle age, these wines typically move toward dried cherry, leather, truffle and forest floor. Medium-bodied but firmly built, with fine, persistent tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish.
