A Barolo that no longer legally exists: EU rules now forbid naming a vineyard on the label unless 85% of the wine comes from it, so Rinaldi's old multi-cru blends were retired and this San Lorenzo Cannubi fruit went into the cuvée now called Tre Tine. Beppe Rinaldi was a traditionalist purist who blended across sites to capture the soul of the appellation rather than one plot, and this bottling is the argument for it — Cannubi's bluish-gray marls for perfume, San Lorenzo for refinement, and Ravera, up at 480 meters in Novello on iron-rich clay-limestone, for mineral cut and Alpine-cooled acidity. The house method is as unadorned as the label: natural-yeast fermentation in his father's ancient oak tini, a month with no temperature control, then three and a half years in big neutral botti, which is to say no oak makeup at all. 2007 was the warm, generous year in an otherwise classical decade for the Langhe, a vintage that gave Barolos of riper, more openly charming character. Nearly two decades on, that makes this an unusually approachable way into a cult address whose bottles people chase across continents. Decant for sediment and give it air.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Good medium red. Reticent nose shows a bit less fruit today than the Brunate-Le Coste; smells softer and broader. Then much more horizontal on the palate than the 2008 version, with a strong flavor of cherry liqueur but not quite the sweetness of the 2007 Brunate-Le Coste. Best today on the very long finish, but the serious tannins will require extended aging." —Stephen Tanzer

Jancis Robinson

"Ornate, mature nose that has the lushness of the earth: it is mossy, mushroomy, silty. The tannins are firm, but have faded with time to give a soft edge to the structure. Delicious chocolate complexity to the finish. Tremendous!"

Wine Spectator

95 points

"The wood initially lends a dill and sawdust quality to the cherry fruit. With air, this reveals greater purity to its strawberry and raspberry flavors. Very elegant, resonating on the long, red berry and mineral aftertaste. Ethereal and old-school."

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"With a blend of fruit from three important vineyard crus (mineral- driven Cannubi, elegant San Lorenzo and the more structured Ravera), this pretty wine gives an excellent overall view of Nebbiolo. The nose is redolent of forest fruit, raspberry, violet and soy sauce."

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The classic Piedmontese table: brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin in butter and sage, tajarin with a ragù of veal, or roast guinea hen. Porcini risotto works beautifully with a mature Nebbiolo like this. Finish with aged Castelmagno or a nutty Bra Duro.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied but not heavy, in the classical Barolo mold: dried rose, red cherry, tar and orange peel on the nose, with the earthy, savory notes that come with age. High acidity keeps it lively, and the tannins are firm but should be resolving at this stage. The finish is long and savory rather than sweet. Decant an hour or so for sediment and air, and serve at cool cellar temperature.
