This blend represents Giuseppe Rinaldi's philosophy at its finest—combining three of Barolo's most prestigious crus into one harmonious expression. Cannubi, the most famous vineyard, contributes bluish-gray marls producing wines with delicate violet aftertones. San Lorenzo adds elegant refinement. Ravera, at 480 meters in Novello, brings mineral sapidity from iron-rich clay-limestone and bright acidity from cooler Alpine currents. Beppe Rinaldi vinifies in ancient oak tini and ages 3.5 years in large neutral botti, allowing terroir to speak without oak interference. The 2005 vintage delivered robust tannins and excellent aging potential following proper rainfall and ideal ripening. This wine is notably searingly tannic and austere—bright, incisive, and tightly wound with spiking acidity. It was expected to need another decade to soften when reviewed in 2015. Now reaching maturity, it rewards patience with profound complexity. A masterclass in Barolo's blending tradition.

"The 2005 Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is one of the most searingly tannic, austere wines of the vintage. Bright, incisive and tightly wound, the 2005 is going to need another decade or so to soften, even then I am not sure it will be an especially pleasurable wine, as the spiking acidity and intense tannins both are overpowering. Readers who want to understand what old-school Barolo is all about should check out the 2005, a wine that serves as a poignant reminder as to how much things have changed over the last decade. Revisited after twelve hours, the 2005 has become civilized, as the fruit fills out the frame to balance the tannins. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2005 or on opening it far in advance." —Antonio Galloni

"This is an extraordinary Barolo with deep and intriguing layers of wild berry, orange zest, almond skin, light graphite shadings and lingering smoke or dried tobacco. The wine feel smooth and supple in the mouth and closes with firm tannins that give it backbone and staying power."

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
