The most accessible way into one of Barolo's most elusive cellars — and one of the very last vintages made in Beppe Rinaldi's lifetime. Rinaldi sold overwhelmingly to private individuals rather than the trade, which is why his wines have always been near-impossible to find in any quantity, and why a Langhe Nebbiolo under this label gets chased like a cru bottling. The house style is unbending traditionalism: spontaneous fermentation, macerations that run past a month, aging in large Slavonian casks and never a barrique. Beppe, fifth generation of a family making wine in Piedmont since 1870, took charge on his father Battista's death in 1992 and refused to modernize a thing; he died in 2018, and his daughters Marta and Carlotta, with their mother Alessia, run the 6.1-hectare estate now. Nearly a decade on, this is Nebbiolo with real bottle age on it rather than a young wine trading on a famous name.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo is a gracious, mid-weight wine to drink now and over the next few years. Attractive spice and floral notes add shades of nuance to the Nebbiolo fruit. Short-ish fermentations keep the flavors bright." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo gives us a great idea of the excellent quality of fruit we can expect when the 2016 Barolos are released in two years' time. This less formal wine shows impressive clarity and precision with extra crunchiness and tartness on the finish. Blue fruit aromas of blueberry and wild plum take center stage. This Nebbiolo was bottled in February and is hitting the market now. The Brunate vineyard had hail damage in 2016, and up to 20% of production was lost. Warm and dry weeks in August helped to bring the fruit to optimal ripeness." —Monica Larner

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
