A magnum of Rinaldi is a long-term bet and a party trick at once. Tre Tine means 'three vats,' for the three lots — Ravera, Cannubi San Lorenzo and Le Coste — vinified separately and blended — the estate's old-school answer to Barolo's single-vineyard arms race — and it's Rinaldi's most savory bottling: sour cherry and dried rose, tea leaf, salt and iron, framed by firm, honest tannin. Native yeasts, long macerations, big old Slavonian casks; the family playbook hasn't changed. The 2021 season was a classic, cool-edged one in Piedmont, and the large format will slow this wine's evolution to a crawl, stretching the drinking window well past what a standard bottle offers. Buy it for a table of people you like, in a year you can't name yet.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2021 Barolo Tre Tine is quite attractive, as it is in most vintages. Red-toned fruit develops first, followed by hints of rose petal, mint, cinnamon and dried flowers that add an exotic flair. More importantly, the tannins—so often quite fierce in the early going—are nicely tamed. The blend is approximately 60% Ravera, 20% Le Coste and 20% Cannubi San Lorenzo." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

95 points

"Labelled as ‘Tre Tini’ since 2010, Rinaldi’s blend of Ravera, Le Coste and Cannubi San Lorenzo harks back to 1993. The three parcels are vinified and aged separately then assembled shortly before bottling. The 2021 was still quite shy when I tried it, hinting furtively at potting soil, mint and cinnamon. An elegantly proportioned frame is firmly fixed around the strawberry canvas. Bitter alpine herbs lend detail, while fine tannins store tension and energy. A smouldering beauty with hidden depths, this will need time to come out of its shell."

Wine Spectator

97 points

"Rose, raspberry, pomegranate and blood orange aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this well-structured red, with a layer of iron, eucalyptus and tobacco adding savory details. This is taut and vibrant, with beautifully integrated tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Shows tension between its power and finesse."

Kerin O'Keefe

98 points

"Made with estate grapes from Ravera, Le Coste e Cannubi San Lorenzo, the 2021 Barolo Tre Tine is beautiful, offering intense aromas of camphor, rose, menthol and forest berry. The vibrant palate reflects the nose, delivering cranberry, red cherry, strawberry, mint and star anise framed in fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity provides balance, tension and energy. Drink 2031–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
