A way into one of Barolo's most chased addresses without waiting for a Barolo. Giuseppe Rinaldi is a traditionalist house that blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites rather than bottling single vineyards, on the conviction that the appellation says more than the plot — organic farming, spontaneous fermentation in the family's ancient upright oak tini, long macerations, aging in big old botti and never a barrique. That same uncompromising hand is behind this Langhe Nebbiolo, so you can actually drink it young. Beppe Rinaldi, who took over in 1992 after a career as a veterinarian, died in 2018; his daughters Marta and Carlotta now run the estate with their mother Alessia, and nothing about the approach has softened. These disappear as fast as the Barolos — grab one when you see it.

Robert Parker

90 points

"The 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo is sourced from 20-year-old vines in the Ravera cru that could otherwise be used to make Barolo. Because the vines are deemed too young for Rinaldi Barolo, the fruit goes here instead. Only 7,000 bottles are made. This easy wine offers dark fruit aromas with soft tannins and a smooth texture. This is a versatile wine that would pair with one of Piedmont's favorite dishes: poached egg topped with shaved white truffle." —Monica Larner

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and sage, braised beef cheek, veal agnolotti, mushroom risotto, or a plate of prosciutto and aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Pale garnet and classically Nebbiolo on the nose: red cherry, dried rose, orange peel and a little tar. Medium-bodied and fairly light on its feet, with bright acidity and fine, gripping tannins that dry the finish. Savory and earthy rather than fruity-sweet, and it opens up with air.
