Grüner Veltliner from Carnuntum, the warm stretch of Austria southeast of Vienna named for the Roman city that once stood here, where the grape trades a little nervousness for breadth. Walter Glatzer farms organically around the village of Göttlesbrunn, and Dornenvogel — 'thorn bird' — comes off loess soils, fermented and raised in stainless steel so nothing gets between you and the fruit. This is the peppery, herb-inflected side of Grüner rather than the tropical side: green apple and pear, a lick of white pepper and dried thyme, and brisk acidity that keeps it moving. An easy house white that happens to be serious about where it comes from.
