The oldest known Sémillon vines in the Pacific Northwest, planted by Oregon pioneer Charles Coury in 1966 and still standing at what is now David Hill in the hills above Forest Grove. Jeff Vejr founded Golden Cluster in 2013 to chase exactly this kind of thing: own-rooted, dry-farmed old vines, forgotten clones and varieties nobody in Oregon plants anymore, a deliberate step outside the state's Pinot-and-Chardonnay mainstream. This is not a Bordeaux-style Sémillon and does not try to be. Vejr works with ambient yeast, a brief spell on the skins, neutral barrels, and bottles unfined and unfiltered, which leaves a white with unusual texture and grip and a savory, almost herbal cast alongside the citrus. Made in tiny quantities. Serve it cool rather than cold and give it a real glass; it opens up considerably over an hour.

Tasting Profile

Lemon rind, quince, lanolin and a green herbal note, with a faint mushroomy savor. Medium-bodied and textural with high, driving acidity and a touch of phenolic grip. Dry, long and mineral on the finish.
