Graham's is one of the grand old houses of the Douro, and Vintage Port is the top of the pyramid: a fortified red made only in the best years and bottled young so it ages for decades in the cellar. 1985 was a celebrated declared vintage — the first unanimous (universal) declaration by every major shipper since 1963 — and four decades on it has arrived exactly where Vintage Port is meant to go: fully mature, its edge softened to amber-tinged crimson, its fruit turned to figs and dried cherry and spice. Graham's house style has always run richer and sweeter than most, and here that generosity has folded into something molten and complete. Because Vintage Port throws a heavy sediment, decant it carefully off the deposit before serving. This is a wine for slow evenings, a fire, and good company. A little goes a long way.

Robert Parker

"Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. It is forward, as are all 1985s, and I would speculate that this port will be approaching maturity by 1992-93 and will keep 15-20 years thereafter." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Deep garnet with narrow bricky rim, darker in colour than the Warre's 1985 and also 'darker' in aroma. Still marked by black fruits. Thick and chewy with a touch of eucalyptus but not as much as on the Warre's 1963. And then a grainy, mocha aftertaste and a very long finish. Still more to show, I think, even though this is already a mature wine."

Decanter

"Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Ready to drink now and will keep and develop in bottle for another thirty years at least!"

"Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This is really excellent. Always has been. Just starting to come around."
