One of the best values going in traditional-method sparkling wine, and the easiest way into what Germany's Sekt revival has produced. Blanc et Noir blends all four classic sparkling varieties — Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier — with roughly 80% from a balanced, ripe-but-fresh 2023 and about 5% from a perpetual reserve that reaches back through every vintage from 2014, a running solera of older wine that gives a young blend depth it could not have on its own. Tradition is Griesel's entry tier, aged at least sixteen months on the lees rather than the three to six years of the upper cuvées, and finished dry. The house works out of the cross-vaulted cellars of the former Hessian State Winery in Bensheim, dug into the Grieselberg hill that gave it its name, revived in 2013 as the first Sekt house of the Hessische Bergstraße. If you assume German sparkling means something cheap and sweet, this is the bottle that changes your mind — and it is the one to buy by the case.
