Aglianico del Vulture is southern Italy's most serious red — grown on the volcanic slopes of an extinct Basilicata stratovolcano — and Grifalco is among its most articulate voices. Founded by Fabrizio Piccin in the early 2000s and now run by sons Lorenzo and Andrea, the family bottles cru-by-cru to highlight the various volcanic soils on Mount Vulture. Damaschito comes from a single, very old vineyard in Contrada San Martino between Maschito and Forenza — iron- and manganese-rich sandy soil that stains the ground a deep red, with layers of volcanic ash beneath. Aged eighteen months in Slavonian oak and a year in bottle before release, the 2021 is the velvet-glove side of Vulture Aglianico — perfumed and energetic, but underpinned by serious structure and a stern mineral core. Built for the decade ahead.

"The 2021 Aglianico del Vulture Damaschito opens slowly in the glass. It wafts up with a dusty blend of dried violets, lavender, smoked meats and ashen stones, giving way to musky black currants and grilled herbs. This is surprisingly energetic, with a stern mineral core and zesty wild berry fruits guided by vibrant acidity. Rosy inner florals form toward the close. The 2021 leaves a coating of fine tannins that tug at the senses, finishing dramatically long and staining with a resonant hit of licorice and tobacco. The Damaschito is an understated beauty." —Eric Guido

"There's a well-cut sense of poise to this structured red, with the frame of dense, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity interwoven with a fragrant range of chopped cherry, plum, dried thyme, paprika and white pepper notes. A latent push of iron- and tar-laced minerality drives the lingering finish."

More about Grifalco

Basilicata's serious play on Aglianico, founded 2004 by Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin (who left Tuscany for the south). Sixteen hectares at 400-500 meters, all organic. Four wines: Gricos (entry), Grifalco (flagship), plus DaMaschito and DaGinestra from old-vine parcels. Precision winemaking for a grape that deserves it.
