The everyday Aglianico that makes the case for the grape without asking you to wait a decade — Gricos is Grifalco's entry bottling, drawn from their younger vines (10 to 30 years old) at 450–550 meters on Mount Vulture's volcanic slopes, and it drinks with real crunch and lift. Fermentation happens in steel and aging is brief and low-key — six to twelve months in second-pass American barrels and French tonneaux, which season the wine rather than mark it — so what comes through is fruit, acidity and volcanic grit rather than oak. The fruit is hand-picked into crates, in the cellar within hours, then run through a linear destemmer that keeps only fully phenolically ripe berries. Grifalco is the Piccin family project, founded in 2004 by Fabrizio and Cecilia, who left Tuscany for Basilicata and now farm sixteen organic hectares, with the Gricos vineyards sitting in Venosa, Maschito and Forenza. The name splits the difference between their two homes: the griffin of Montepulciano married to the falcon of Monte Vulture (that bird on the label is not a vulture). At 13% alcohol and 40,000 bottles, this is the anti-blockbuster southern Italian red — serious grape, honest farming, remarkable quality for the price.

"The 2023 Aglianico del Vulture Gricos is impossible to ignore, delivering an attractive bouquet of wild strawberries, rhubarb, minty herbs and a tinge of confectionary spice. Juicy to the core, it splashes across the palate with masses of ripe wild berry fruit. Savory herbs and salty minerals lend contrast while vibrant acidity provides energy. This leaves a crunch of tannin on the lightly structured finish. Gricos may be the best deal in Vulture Aglianico on the market today." —Eric Guido

More about Grifalco

Basilicata's serious play on Aglianico, founded 2004 by Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin (who left Tuscany for the south). Sixteen hectares at 400-500 meters, all organic. Four wines: Gricos (entry), Grifalco (flagship), plus DaMaschito and DaGinestra from old-vine parcels. Precision winemaking for a grape that deserves it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb sausages with lentils, braised pork ribs with fennel, mushroom and sausage ragù over orecchiette, grilled eggplant with aged pecorino, or a simple pizza with hot soppressata.

Tasting Profile

Ruby with violet edges. Crunchy red cherry and red plum, with pepper, dried flowers, forest floor and a smoky-mineral note. Medium-bodied and light on its feet rather than heavy, with bright, marked acidity. A graphite, faintly savory finish. Best with a little air, or a light chill on a warm night.
