This is Grand Cru white Burgundy from Corton-Charlemagne, a hill with two emperors in its name. It's one of three grands crus from the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses, alongside Corton and Charlemagne. It sits right where the Côte de Nuits gives way to the Côte de Beaune, though the appellation leans toward Beaune. The vineyards run between 280 and 330 metres up the slope. Grand Cru is the top of Burgundy's ladder, and this 2021 from Guillemard is a bottle to open when the dinner deserves it (a good excuse to try out the trivia, too).

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Corton-Charlemagne profile: lemon, green apple and ripe orchard fruit, with hints of hazelnut and a stony, chalky minerality. It is typically full-bodied but tightly wound, with firm, bright acidity keeping the richness in check and a long, dry, saline finish. Think of Meursault's richness with a more mineral, focused edge.
