Coteaux de Bassenon sits at the extreme southern tip of Cote-Rotie, in the village of Tupin et Semons, and Guy Bernard works a small old-vine parcel there on granite slopes facing due south. This is a multi-generation family domaine that's converted to organic farming, and the wine is mostly Syrah with a touch of Condrieu (Viognier) co-fermented in, the classic Cote-Rotie move that lifts the aromatics. Fermented in stainless and aged in barrel, it shows real finesse rather than weight. The 2010 was a structured, classic vintage; give it a decant. An honest, elegant Cote-Rotie from a quiet corner of the appellation.
