Pinot Noir on volcanic basalt in the Auvergne, a pairing of grape and place almost nobody attempts, and the result lands closer to cool-climate Burgundy than to anything you'd expect from the Massif Central. Henri Chauvet left banking, trained with Thierry Allemand in Cornas, and took over Annie Sauvat's estate in Boudes in 2021, putting all of it into organic conversion in his first year. Vie Ordinaire comes from his most volcanic parcels, fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts and about two weeks on the skins in stainless steel, then aged about nine months in a mix of used barrels before bottling with almost no sulfur. It goes out as Vin de France rather than under the Cotes d'Auvergne appellation. The name means 'ordinary life,' which undersells it considerably; serve it with a light chill.
