The Germain family's connection to Chassagne-Montrachet came through Henri's marriage to Paulette Pillot, whose family brought exceptional vineyard holdings including this parcel in Morgeot Les Fairendes. Morgeot is cumulatively the largest premier cru in Chassagne, but Les Fairendes sits on distinctive poor white soils that yield wines combining power with elegance. Jean-François Germain's organic farming and minimal-intervention winemaking—unfined, unfiltered, modest new oak—allow the terroir to speak clearly. A white Burgundy of breed and complexity from one of the region's most authentic family estates.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Les Fairendes 1er Cru offers fine concentration on the nose, although it doesn't quite have the complexity of Germain's Meursault Premier Crus. Maybe this has more to give once in bottle, like an excellent 2019 drunk the night before my visit. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, touches of orange rind and a light cough candy trait, though it doesn't quite kick on toward the finish." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of sweet orchard fruit, peaches, toasted nuts and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's suave and giving, with a lively core of fruit and a saline finish. This is, as usual, the richest wine in the range, but it hasn't lost its balance." —William Kelley

More about Henri Germain

Jean-François Germain runs seven hectares of Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Beaune from a cellar so cold it's legendary. His daughter Lucie joined in 2018, and together they're making whites (three-quarters of production) with the kind of tautness and concentration that gets allocations and whispered about in restaurants. Lutte raisonnée, hand-harvested, traditionally vinified—the Burgundy way that actually works.
