All Pinot Noir, all Grand Cru, and almost no sugar — this is Champagne with its frame showing. The fruit comes from Verzenay and Verzy, two of the Montagne de Reims villages that made Pinot Noir's reputation in Champagne, where the slope faces north and the chalk keeps the wines tense even in ripe years. Henriet-Bazin is a fourth-generation grower family farming these parcels under HVE certification and bottling their own wine rather than selling the fruit on. Finished Extra Brut, so the dosage is a whisper and the wine's weight comes from the Pinot itself rather than from sugar. It has the red-fruited depth of a Blanc de Noirs without the broadness that usually comes with it — a dinner-table Champagne more than an aperitif.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Limpid onion skin color. Red berries and dried rose on the pungent, lees-accented nose. Sappy, tightly focused strawberry and bitter orange pith flavors show very good clarity, with a hint of candied ginger contributing sweetness. A smoky note builds with air and carries through the long, spicy finish, with the orange note echoing." —Josh Raynolds

"Parcels of Pinot Noir grown in northeast-facing vineyards on the Montagne de Reims give richness while also a structured cool character that brings out the wine's fruitiness and texture. This is a finely poised Champagne that is ready to drink." —Roger Voss

More about Henriet-bazin

Henriet-Bazin makes Champagne from both sides of an unusual divide on the Montagne de Reims. Their home village, Villers-Marmery, is a Premier Cru planted almost entirely to Chardonnay in what is otherwise Pinot Noir country. Next door, the family farms Grand Cru Pinot Noir in Verzy and Verzenay.

This is a true grower house (récoltant-manipulant), and it has been in the family for four generations. Gaston Henriet founded it in 1890. His son Robert took over in 1930 and his grandson Daniel in 1962. Daniel married Michelle Bazin, the daughter of a Villers-Marmery grower, and the house took both names. Their daughter Marie-Noëlle has run it since 1991. The estate covers just under eight hectares of chalk-based vineyards. It is HVE-certified and has more recently been converting to organic farming.

The range shows that split clearly. Blanc de Blancs from Villers-Marmery is all citrus cut and chalky grip, a fascinating counterpoint to Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs has red-fruited depth and tension. There's also a Meunier Blanc de Noirs, and Gaston et Louise, a zero-dosage Pinot Noir-Chardonnay blend drawing on a solera of reserve wines begun in 1968. Dosage is kept low, so these are Champagnes for the dinner table as much as the aperitif hour.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, duck rillettes, mushroom tart, charcuterie, or seared tuna. Rich enough for pork belly and paté, dry enough to reset the palate between bites.

Tasting Profile

Red apple, strawberry, toasted bread and a smoky chalk note. Medium-bodied and dry, with a fine mousse, firm acidity and a long, savory, mineral finish.
