Hermann Ludes, Riesling Thornicher Ritsch Kabinett "Speyer", 2024

The Thornicher Ritsch is one of the Mosel's quieter secrets — a steep south-facing slate slope in the village of Thörnich, in the middle Mosel, that produces Riesling of genuine delicacy and minerality. Hermann Ludes works these vineyards with the understated care of a small producer who has nothing to prove and everything to express. The 'Speyer' Kabinett from 2024 is bone-dry (Trocken) in the modern Mosel style — low in alcohol, high in tension, built to age gracefully over a decade or more. Classic Mosel in all the right ways.

More about Hermann Ludes

Julian Ludes took over his uncle Hermann's winery in the Mosel in 2020 and immediately started pushing harder into raw, reductive Riesling. Twelve hectares of steep vineyards including the legendary Ritsch site (with old ungrafted vines) ferment wild, stay in barrel as long as they need, and never get the lab-coat treatment. This is minimal-intervention Mosel made modern.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
