Hervé Rafflin’s La Nature’l Extra Brut is a premier cru Champagne that offers a pure and elegant expression of the Montagne de Reims terroir. Made primarily from 80% Pinot Meunier, complemented by 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir, this champagne delivers bright citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit, alongside orchard fruits like green apple and white peach. The underlying floral tones and a subtle touch of baked bread add complexity to its light, acid-driven body, resulting in a vibrant and refreshing experience. With a dosage of only 1.8 grams per liter, the wine’s extra brut classification enhances its crisp, dry finish.

The vineyards, located in Ludes and Chigny-les-Roses, are organically farmed, with vines averaging 30 years of age. Rafflin’s dedication to natural viticulture is evident in his minimal intervention approach, allowing the unique characteristics of the premier cru terroir to shine through. The grapes undergo traditional fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Aged for at least eight months, this champagne develops a harmonious balance of freshness and depth, making it an excellent companion for refined dishes.

Hervé Rafflin, whose family has roots in Champagne dating back to the 1840s, has overseen this small estate since 2001. His production is limited, often between 5,000 and 13,000 bottles per year, ensuring a focus on quality over quantity. This commitment to craftsmanship is reflected in the wine’s lively character, making it ideal for pairing with sushi, sashimi, oysters, and creamy soft cheeses, or simply enjoyed as an aperitif. The estate’s organic certification and artisanal approach have earned this champagne a reputation for being both delicious and thoughtfully produced

More about Herve Rafflin

Fifth-generation Champagne roots (since 1840s), but Hervé took over just his own 2008 project in 2001. Five hectares in Montagne de Reims, eighty percent Pinot Meunier with finesse, all certified organic as of 2021. He makes as few as five thousand bottles a year—confidential, precise, and balanced between tension and aromatic intensity. Small-batch legitimacy.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
