Hirsch calls East Ridge its "mountain wine": a regal, powerful Pinot Noir and one of the most age-worthy bottles the estate makes. If you think of Sonoma Coast Pinot as light and delicate, this is the counterargument. It comes from some of the oldest vines on the property (David Hirsch began planting the ridge in 1990), growing in shallow mountain soils. Around 80% of the old vines have phylloxera, which saps their vigor, slows ripening and keeps yields in the oldest sections extremely low, so the vines have to be farmed one by one. 2023 was the coolest, longest season at Hirsch in decades, and the harvest was the latest since the 1990s. Jasmine Hirsch says 2023 isn't a tannic vintage, but East Ridge bucks the trend: its usually chewy structure comes out long and silky, with the pure, Old World feel she sees in the vintage as a whole. Only 465 cases were made from biodynamically farmed estate fruit in the tiny Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. You can drink it now if you give it a few hours of air, and the vintage's high acidity means it will also age for a long time.

More about Hirsch Vineyards

David Hirsch fell in love with Burgundy in the 1970s, then set out to translate that dream into Sonoma Coast terroir. Since 1980, he's planted a vineyard so fragmented (67 individual blocks) that it rivals Burgundy's own subdivision. All farmed biodynamically since 2011 with no machines, his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay capture the Sonoma Coast's bracing minerality and elegance—a love letter to place.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared duck breast with a cherry or plum sauce; roast squab; lamb loin with rosemary and thyme; wild mushroom risotto; pork tenderloin with fennel and star anise.

Tasting Profile

Expect a darker, more structured take on Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir: black cherry and wild berry fruit, with the savoury, earthy and forest-floor notes typical of mountain sites. It's typically medium- to full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins and bright acidity, and it finishes long and dry. Think of it as a sturdier, more serious Pinot built to age, not a light, delicate one.
