David Hirsch fell for Burgundy in the 1970s, then translated that obsession into one of the most extreme cool-climate vineyards in California, planted on a ridge above the Pacific directly atop the San Andreas fault. The estate is now a patchwork of 67 individual blocks, farmed biodynamically since 2011 (fully converted by 2014), with his daughter Jasmine taking over as winemaker in 2019, and the San Andreas bottling is the signature: a selection drawn from roughly thirty distinct farming blocks, a complete portrait of the property in a single glass. The 2023 is unmistakably Hirsch — savory, mineral, salt-lifted, with red and dark cherry fruit framed by tea leaf, baking spice, and that bracing oceanic acidity. Burgundian in spirit, Sonoma Coast in DNA.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate San Andreas Fault is a pretty powerful, tightly wound wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Brisk acids and beams of tannin confer a good deal of salivating freshness. Expressive savory, chalky and mineral undertones take on greater prominence with air. Give this time to soften. Today, the 2023 captures all the tension of this cool, late-ripening year."

More about Hirsch Vineyards

David Hirsch fell in love with Burgundy in the 1970s, then set out to translate that dream into Sonoma Coast terroir. Since 1980, he's planted a vineyard so fragmented (67 individual blocks) that it rivals Burgundy's own subdivision. All farmed biodynamically since 2011 with no machines, his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay capture the Sonoma Coast's bracing minerality and elegance—a love letter to place.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and energetic. Red and dark cherry, pomegranate, tea leaf, baking spice, and bay laurel over a saline, mineral spine. Fine tannins, bracing cool-climate acidity, savory, lingering finish.
