2018 gave the Saar its ripest fruit in years, and these old vines turned it into something concentrated and faintly tropical — yet the wine still went into bottle at 9% alcohol. Alte Reben means the Webers' block of roughly eighty-year-old ungrafted Riesling in the Gross Schock, the south-turning sector at the heart of the Krettnacher Euchariusberg; the deeper soil there lets roots reach far enough that the vines rarely lack water, no small advantage in a drought summer like that one. Everything happens in wood — whole bunches into an old press, ambient yeasts, thousand-liter oak Fuder, no tanks at all — and each cask is bottled on its own, which is precisely what the AP #8 on the label records. Of the four vintages of this bottling we have, 2018 is the most immediately generous and the easiest to open tonight. From a private cellar; drinking well now, with a decade of life still in it.

Antonio Galloni

"From ungrafted 80-year-old vines in the long-celebrated Gross Schock portion of the Euchariusberg, this is one of those Weber Rieslings that features striking and ultimately mouthwatering marine elements, in the present instance reminiscent of the Herrenberg Kabinett A.P. #1 except in residually sweet garb. Along with scents of sea breeze come intimations of apple, white peach and lime that translate into succulent ripeness, infectious juiciness and zesty invigoration on a delicate, polished palate. The finish consummately refreshes while delivering a veritable electric shock to the tongue and leaving an ineradicable residue of mineral salts and crushed stone on the gums and teeth." —David Schildknecht

"Exclusively from the Gisela parcel and bottled with 9% alcohol, the 2018 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben (AP 08) offers delicately fine and weathered slate and flint stone aromas, indicating great complexity. On the palate, this is an immensely straight, fresh and linear Riesling with highly mineral acidity and generous, intense and concentrated fruit. Very complex and amazingly long this is an expressive terroir wine that needs a decade to show its class. Great transparency, tension and mineral grip here. Great expression. Tasted in June 2019." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Hofgut Falkenstein

The Webers bought this Saar estate in 1981 and decided to do everything in barrel—fermentation, elevage, everything. No tanks at all. Each Fuder gets bottled separately, a restoration of old-time practice that lets you taste the micro-variations between casks from the same site. Minimal intervention since 2021-certified organic; this is Mosel winemaking as philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green curry, dan dan noodles, roast pork with crackling and apple sauce, or mussels steamed in cream and Riesling.

Tasting Profile

Ripe peach, pineapple and orange blossom over wet stone — rounder and riper than the 2016 or 2017. Still light on its feet at 9% alcohol, with a cleansing streak of acidity down the middle and a gently sweet, mineral close.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
