Chambolle elegance at the 1er Cru level. Les Charmes sits on the Vougeot side of Chambolle, right next to Les Amoureuses, and Hudelot-Noellat owns a single tiny parcel here — 0.21 hectares planted in 1955. Charles van Canneyt (Alain Hudelot-Noellat's grandson) took over winemaking in 2008 and has steadily pushed this house into the conversation with the village's best. The 2021 is the cool, classical vintage Chambolle drinkers wait for — perfumed and weightless, full of dark cherry, cassis, pressed violets and rose petal, with silky tannins and the mineral lift that 70-year-old vines on the lower slope of Chambolle deliver. A precise, deeply Chambolle bottle from one of the appellation's most respected addresses.

"From a .20 ha parcel of 30+ year old vines that produce between 4 and 5 barrels in an average year A strikingly pure and fresh nose freely offers up its aromas of essence of red cherry, raspberry and cool floral wisps. The equally cool and restrained middleweight flavors possess a super-sleek mouthfeel and excellent delineation on the moderately austere, linear and bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. This is lovely and a wine that should further flesh out with a few years of keeping."

"The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes across a little reduced on the nose at the moment. Touches of mulch filtering through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, balanced, slightly bitter and like the Vougeot, just a bit "undernourished" on the finish." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Bursting with aromas of raspberries, petals, sweet orange zest, plums and spices, the 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a saline finish." —William Kelley

Decanter

"The Chambolle Charmes from Hudelot-Noellat is charming indeed, with lush black cherry fruit touched with notes of lavender, liquorice, and earth. The texture is supple and fairly full-bodied for the vintage, and although there is nothing hard-edged about this wine, it has enough substance to linger gently on the palate. It is fermented from 0.21 hectares of old vine fruit, which is mostly destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask (25% new)."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine for the elegant Burgundy table: roast squab, duck breast with cherries, mushroom risotto, or rack of lamb with herbs. Also lovely with a soft-rind cheese like Brillat-Savarin or aged Comte at the end.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, perfumed, silky. Dark cherry, cassis, pressed violets, rose petal and forest floor over a mineral spine. Tannins are fine-grained and quiet; the finish lifts on cool 2021 acidity. Drinking now and through the late 2030s.
