Hugo Mendes trained as a biotech engineer before the wine bug bit, working his way up to head winemaker in Bucelas before going solo with his own label outside Lisbon. His Pitau range was created with a purpose beyond the glass, to fund social work in the area near where he and his wife grew up. The Branco is built from traditional Lisboa white grapes like Fernao Pires, Vital and Arinto, the kind of nearly forgotten varieties Mendes loves to champion. It's a fresh, clean, transparent white made for everyday drinking. Easy to love, easy to keep on hand.

"The white 2024 Pitau Branco, a range inspired by the old field blends, was produced with Arinto, Fernão Pires, Vital, Alvarinho and Viosinho grapes. It is aromatic and floral, clean and young, fresh and with moderate ripeness and only 11.5% alcohol and a lightish palate with notable acidity and shy flavors. This was bottled unoaked. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2025." —Luis Gutiérrez

Hugo left his cellaring apprenticeship in 2016 to crowdfund his own label—first in Portugal—and it worked. Now he works from Alenquer north of Lisbon, focusing on forgotten grapes like Fernão Pires, Vital, and Castelão. His 'Underdog' label (made in ancient talhas) is the proof that unconventional wine deserves a shot. He's a wizard without the academy.
