Hugues Godme, Champagne Extra Brut "Les Bouquets", 2013

This is single-vineyard Grand Cru Champagne from a family grower, and a 2013 vintage at that. It comes from Verzenay, the northernmost Grand Cru in Champagne. The village faces away from the sun, which makes ripening Pinot Noir harder there than in Aÿ, so what you get is Champagne shaped by a cool, demanding site. Les Bouquets sits in Verzenay between two small hills, so its vines face in many different directions. Hugues Godmé got his first vineyard in 1976, a gift for graduating from viticulture school, and he now runs the estate with his daughter Lucille. He broke with family tradition by switching to organic farming in 2006. The certification came through in 2013, the year of this vintage, and the domaine is now certified biodynamic too. Fermentations start on their own with native yeasts, in neutral oak and enamel-lined cement, and each parcel is made separately. The family makes its single-vineyard cuvées in very small quantities, and the point is to taste the place. It's a serious bottle that the big brand names can't really match.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Warm gougères; roast chicken with morels; lobster rolls or butter-poached lobster; sushi like yellowtail and toro; aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the deeper, more structured style of Verzenay Pinot Noir: red apple, red berries and citrus, with brioche and a subtle nutty note from fermentation in neutral oak. With little or no dosage, it typically drinks bone-dry and taut, with a fine mousse, firm cool-climate acidity and a long, chalky, mineral finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
