This comes from an actual island — a sandbank in the Rhône delta about 25km south of Arles and 15km from the Mediterranean, farmed by the same family since 1927 and still grazed by roughly 200 sheep whose manure feeds the vines. The blend is Bordeaux rather than Rhône: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carménère and Arinarnoa, that last one a French research crossing of Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon that almost nobody plants. Deep, well-draining sand and silt, constant sea air, and a short fermentation of about five days add up to a featherlight red with low alcohol and zippy acidity — closer in spirit to a chilled Gamay or a Loire red than to anything you'd expect from the Midi. Fourth-generation Julien Henry runs the place now, sustainably certified since 2018. Twenty minutes in the fridge and it's ready.

More about Isle Saint-Pierre

Sitting on a small island in the Rhône River, this domaine founded in 1927 has passed through generations—now run by fourth-generation vigneron Julien Henry. The terroir is quirky: island-life delivers ripe fruit with an almost salty edge that defines the house style. These are wines that feel place-bound in a way that mainland Rhône rarely achieves.
