Bonnes-Mares is the frank, solid side of a cellar better known for perfume, and this 1998 lets you drink it with decades of age behind it. That's far past the five to ten years Frédéric Mugnier himself says it needs at minimum. His parcel is a narrow strip of just 0.36 hectares, which makes only 900 to 1,500 bottles a year. The vineyard sits on the border between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. Mugnier credits Morey for the wine's earthy, solid side. That weight doesn't come from pushing extraction: he makes every wine the same way. The 1998 comes from before the domaine grew from 4 to 14 hectares in 2003, when it was only 4 hectares. It was run by a former oil engineer who took over the family estate in 1985. Save it for a serious dinner.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Bright red. Cool, spicy aromas of blueberry, clove and earth. Quite powerful and penetrating in the mouth, but also very closed and rather dominated today by its tannic spine. Still, this avoids the middle-palate dip shown by most recent vintages of this wine: here there plenty of density and character. Really broadens out nicely on the long back end." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

92 points

"The ruby-colored 1998 Bonnes Mares offers intense, wild berry aromas. Medium to full-bodied and satiny-textured, it has excellent to outstanding depth of fruit, power, and detail. Loads of red and black cherries enrobe its ripe but firm tannins." —Pierre Rovani

More about Jacques-Frederic Mugnier

When Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier pulls Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny, especially the legendary Les Amoureuses, you're tasting one of Burgundy's most hypnotic expressions. Aromatic, silken, age-worthy—wines that sit at the exact intersection of power and grace, of fruit and structure. Becky Wasserman's importing ensures these reach the best tables in America. Worth the effort to find and worth the price once you understand what you're getting.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The producer recommends richer dishes than you'd pick for other Chambolle, such as meat in sauce or game. Try jugged hare, venison loin with a red wine and juniper sauce, braised beef cheeks, roast pheasant with mushrooms, or coq au vin made with Burgundy.

Tasting Profile

Expect Bonnes-Mares' classic blend of Chambolle-Musigny's red cherry and raspberry with mineral notes and a touch of forest floor, plus the frank, earthy weight that Morey-Saint-Denis lends. Typically fuller and firmer than Mugnier's more perfumed Chambolle wines, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury, dry finish; with age the style moves toward leather, spice and truffle.
