JB Becker, Riesling Oberberg Spatlese Halbtrocken, 2017

White Wine from Rheingau, Germany
$34.99
Use code 10OFF to get 10% off 12+ bottles

A half-dry Spatlese from HaJo Becker, the over-80-year-old Rheingau original who still swims in the Rhein each morning and has been making classically styled, site-specific Rieslings since 1971. This Oberberg Spatlese Halbtrocken comes from a Walluf vineyard, farmed organically with wild yeasts and aged long in neutral cask, the old-fashioned way Becker still labels and makes his wines. Spatlese ripeness gives a bit more weight and depth than Kabinett, with the off-dry balance keeping it fresh and food-friendly. From the 2017 vintage and arriving as a pre-arrival library release. ETA September 2026.

More about JB Becker

Hans-Josef Becker was pioneering dry Riesling in the 1970s when everyone else wanted sweetness. Now, decades later, his nervy, structured Rheingau wines are recognized as some of Germany's best. The wines are organic, hand-harvested, and aged in traditional barrels—they prove that dry Riesling improves for decades in the cellar.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
