Lapalu's Cuvee des Fous - the 'cuvee of the crazy ones' - is one of the boldest wines from a grower who's earned a spot alongside natural Beaujolais legends like Metras and Foillard. Jean-Claude Lapalu farms old Brouilly vines organically on granite and clay, then works with minimal intervention in the cellar, often forgoing sulfur entirely, to capture pure fruit and electricity. It's gutsy and a little wild, yet always anchored by Lapalu's instinct for precision. This is a mature, back-vintage bottle from a private collection, drinking with the earthy, secondary layers that good Gamay develops over time. A year younger than the 2014, it should still carry a touch more fruit alongside its mellowing.

Antonio Galloni

"Limpid purple. Ripe, highly perfumed red berry and cherry scents are complicated by suggestions of peppery spices, smoked meat and incense. Sappy, concentrated and focused on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors and a suggestion of spicecake. Brawny yet surprisingly lively, closing with powerful thrust and silky, even tannins that sneak in late to add shape and gentle grip." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2015 Brouilly Cuvée des Fous had been racked the day before my visit to the domaine and I tasted this directly from vat. It has an intense dark cherry, cassis and iodine-scented bouquet with gorgeous raspberry ripple scents lurking just underneath. The palate is very well balanced with fine, very lithe tannin. The acidity here is perfectly judged, as it sashays towards a composed and very pure and long finish. Wow - this is going to turn into one sensual and compelling Beaujolais." —Neal Martin

More about Jean-Claude Lapalu

In 1995, at 33, Jean-Claude Lapalu decided to bottle his own wine instead of selling to the cooperative. Now, a darling of Paris natural-wine circles, he tends 12 hectares of organically farmed old vines (averaging 60-80 years) on granite soils. A disciple of Jules Chauvet, he rejects all chemical inputs and embraces the philosophy that great wine happens in the vineyard, not the cellar.

Tasting Profile

Energetic, low-intervention Gamay with red fruit beginning to mellow, earthy savor, supple tannins, and fresh acidity. Maturing but still lively.
