Jean Foillard helped redefine what Cru Beaujolais could be — one of Kermit Lynch's "Gang of Four" who traded sugary Nouveau for living, low-intervention wine. His Fleurie is the floral, perfumed counterpoint to his Morgons: old-vine Gamay on pink granite, semi-carbonic fermentation, native yeast, minimal sulfur. The 2011 is a back-vintage bottle from a private collection, drinking in a mellow, mature register today. It leans more toward dried fruit and savory tones than youthful pop. A graceful, ready-to-drink Fleurie for the Foillard faithful.

"Brilliant ruby. Potent, mineral-laced dark berry and floral scents are complemented by suggestions of licorice and black tea. Intense black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors pick up a smoky nuance with air. The mineral note comes back on the finish, which features dusty tannins and a sexy violet pastille quality. I really like this wine's focus." —Josh Raynolds

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.

Tasting Profile

Perfumed and mature: dried red berries, violets fading to potpourri, gentle earthiness. Silky, light-to-medium body with fresh acid and a soft finish.
