Fichet's village Meursault is blended from several lieux-dits — a portrait of the whole commune rather than a single slice of it. He's a small grower with old vines, parcels under a hectare apiece, and a relentless focus on purity and precision, which is why his village wine punches so far above its rank. 2015 was a warm, ripe year in Burgundy, and eleven years on this magnum has traded its primary fruit for the good stuff: hazelnut, honeyed orchard fruit, a whiff of toast, all still framed by the saline mineral spine that keeps Fichet's wines light on their feet. The large format has kept it unhurried and fresh. Open it for a table, not for yourself.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Pale, bright yellow. Lemon drop, grapefruit and white flowers on the nicely perfumed nose, plus a subtle note of spicy oak. Tactile, lemony and precise, with subtle saline minerality giving oomph to the middle palate of this surprisingly intense, brisk wine. Delivers striking salinity for village wine, and finishes subtly persistent and firm. Balanced from day one but has the energy and spine to evolve positively in bottle. A very successful village wine with excellent length." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Jean-Philippe Fichet

A tireless devotee of Meursault's terroir, Fichet works his vines from dawn to dusk with severe pruning and relentless focus. His Aligoté shatters the grape's reputation for anonymity—crystalline, focused, with the stoniness of serious Burgundy. This is proof that Aligoté, in the right hands, becomes a wine worth seeking out.
