2016 is the vintage Burgundy nearly lost: a brutal April frost cut the crop to a fraction of normal, and what survived came in concentrated and tightly wound. Jean-Philippe Fichet's village Meursault, drawn from several separate lieux-dits across the commune, makes a fine argument for the year — precise, chiseled, less about flesh than about line and length. Fichet farms tiny old-vine parcels and pursues purity with unusual single-mindedness, and a vintage like this one rewards exactly that. A decade in, the wine is opening into hazelnut and citrus oil over a stony, saline core, but the tension is still very much intact. In magnum, it has barely gotten started.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Pale straw-yellow. White nectarine and spices dominate the nose. Supple, nicely concentrated village wine with fruit-driven flavors of white peach and nectarine. Boasts a lovely glyceral quality but also good energy and cut thanks to an element of dusty stone. Fichet produced 40 hectoliters per hectare following minor losses to frost." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Jean-Philippe Fichet

A tireless devotee of Meursault's terroir, Fichet works his vines from dawn to dusk with severe pruning and relentless focus. His Aligoté shatters the grape's reputation for anonymity—crystalline, focused, with the stoniness of serious Burgundy. This is proof that Aligoté, in the right hands, becomes a wine worth seeking out.
