Santenay is far better known for red, which is exactly why its whites are one of the Côte de Beaune's last remaining bargains. Les Charrons is a small parcel at the western end of the village, sitting on the lower-mid slope with a south-facing exposure and clay-limestone soils - enough warmth to ripen Chardonnay properly, enough limestone to keep it tense. Jérôme Fornerot farms it the old-fashioned way: vines planted at a dense 10,000 per hectare, moderate ploughing, phytosanitary treatments kept controlled and reasoned, and everything picked by hand. In the cellar it's straight Burgundian tradition - gentle handling and controlled barrel ageing, no tricks. The Fornerot family has been farming the Côte de Beaune for five centuries, though Jérôme only founded his own domaine in 2004, expanding to 16.5 hectares after the family's parcels (mostly in Saint-Aubin) came into the fold. For anyone who has watched white Burgundy prices go sideways, this is the kind of address worth memorising.

More about Jerome Fornerot

The Fornerot family has farmed vineyards in the Côte de Beaune for five centuries, and Jérôme launched his own domaine in 2004 with 4.5 hectares that's since grown to 16.5. Saint-Aubin is his kingdom—overlooked for years, now one of Burgundy's most exciting sources. Patient, refined, worth seeking.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, sole meunière, gruyère and leek tart, scallops with brown butter, or a plate of Comté and walnuts.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with aromas of white peach, green apple and a chalky, stony note. Barrel ageing adds a light touch of toast and cream without covering the fruit. Bright, firm acidity runs through the middle, and the finish is clean and mineral rather than rich.
