Karambolage is the word for a carom β the billiards shot where one ball cracks into another and everything on the table changes position. It is a good name for a wine Jonas Dostert built out of collisions. This is a non-vintage bottling from the Obermosel, the limestone stretch of the river upstream from the slate that gets all the photographs, and it sits happily outside the usual German conversation about vintage, site and variety. Dostert is one of the most interesting young growers working in Germany right now, farming chalky ground and keeping his hands out of the cellar as much as he can. Think of it as the house pour for people who would rather not be told what they're drinking before they drink it.

WINE GUIDES
German Wines
Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germanyβs great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germanyβs other white grapes or perhaps a glass of SpΓ€tburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). Itβs time to get started!
