Joseph Drouhin spent years as one of Burgundy's top négociants and now, growing the vast majority of its own fruit, prefers to be thought of as a top domaine — and their Chambolle-Musigny shows why. Chambolle is the village that turns Pinot Noir into perfume and lace, and this 1er Cru bottling, blended from parcels in Noirots, Hauts Doix, Borniques, Plantes and Combottes on east-facing Jurassic limestone, captures that signature delicacy and lift. 2010 was a cold, awkward growing season that gave tiny, concentrated berries and one of the smallest crops in twenty years; the wines came out classic and long, and Drouhin singled out the Côte de Nuits as the highlight of the vintage. Sixteen years on it is drinking beautifully — the fruit is still bright and the tannins have dissolved into the perfume rather than standing apart from it. From a private cellar, ready now, with room to hold if you want it. It's the prettier, more aromatic side of Burgundy.

Burghound

90 points

"A ripe and moderately elegant nose offers up notes of ripe and fresh dark pinot fruit, wet stone and relatively strong earth scents. There is the hallmark Chambolle refinement to the pure and equally ripe middle weight flavors that are supported by dense but fine tannins that contribute to the suave mouth feel, all wrapped in a persistent and dusty finish that offers very good if not truly exceptional depth."

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru shows the extroverted side of Chambolle in its exuberant dark fruit and powerful tannins. The wine turns more delicate and sensual with time in the glass. The 1er Cru had just been bottled at the time of my visit and there is little doubt it needs time to recover. Still, this is a fairly big style of Chambolle. The 1er Cru is a blend of five vineyards on the south side of the village." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

92 points

"A languid red, with cherry, raspberry and currant flavors that float across the palate on a silky texture. Spice and earth notes add depth to this long and harmonious version."

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"A blend of wines from a number of Chambolle's premier cru vineyards, this is a rich and generous wine, with spice and red berry flavors, plus sweet tannins and a firm feel on the finish." —Roger Voss

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
