The most accessible and perfumed of Gevrey's Grand Crus, from the historic Beaune house. Charmes-Chambertin is the largest of the nine Gevrey Grands Crus — a wine of supple red fruit and silken texture rather than the structural muscle of Mazis or Chambertin itself, the Grand Cru that opens earliest and rewards drinkers willing to come to it on its own perfumed terms. Joseph Drouhin has been family-owned since 1880, with organic farming begun in the late 1980s/early 1990s and full organic certification achieved later, with biodynamic practices instituted later. 2020 was a warm but balanced Burgundy vintage that gave Pinot Noir of real concentration alongside lift — and the Drouhin signature of restraint keeps it from tipping into excess. Young and primary now; decant aggressively or tuck away for a decade to watch the perfume bloom.

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of wild berries, cherries, loamy soil and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with ripe, supple tannins and lively acids, it's broad and charming, concluding with a nicely defined finish." —William Kelley

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
