Part of this wine is declassified fruit from the young vines of Clos des Mouches, Drouhin's celebrated Beaune premier cru, which makes it an unusually affordable way to get a read on a great vineyard. The rest comes from the Cote de Beaune appellation proper - the vineyards on top of the hill overlooking the city of Beaune, not to be confused with Cote de Beaune-Villages, which is a red-only blending appellation. The clay and limestone here is light, and it shows: fermentation and twelve to fourteen months of ageing happen in French oak barrels with only 10 to 15% of them new, and the result leans on finesse rather than weight. Maurice Drouhin began cutting chemical treatments in the vineyards back in 1957, and the house has spent the last three decades converting its holdings to biodynamic farming. 2023 was one of the hottest years Burgundy has recorded, hotter even than 2022, and the wine is correspondingly ample and generous while holding its freshness. Serve it around 13C; the house suggests drinking it within four to six years.

"The 2023 Côte de Beaune Blanc comes from the younger vines in Clos des Mouches. It has a pleasant, expressive nose with hints of orchard fruit, apricot and white tea. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity. This is a little austere compared to other cuvées at the moment. It's more about texture than obvious fruit.
