Griotte-Chambertin is the smallest Grand Cru on the Gevrey hill, named for the sour-cherry note that runs through its wines, and Joseph Drouhin tends a precious slice of it. Drouhin has been a fixture of Burgundy since 1880, family-owned, with organic conversion begun in the late 1980s and biodynamic practices instituted from the mid-1990s, with the vast majority of fruit coming from their own vines. The 2018 plays the warm, generous side of the vintage with characteristic Drouhin restraint: silky and perfumed, with that telltale griotte cherry, rose petal, and savory spice unfolding over a mineral, classically Gevrey core. Ample early-drinking pleasure now, with the structure to reward another decade or more in a cool cellar.

"A fresh, cool and densely fruited nose display a broad variety of aromas that include menthol, cassis, smoked game, earth, anise and plenty of floral characters. The relatively refined medium weight plus flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the tautly muscular finish where a hint of bitter cherry appears. This needs to develop better depth though the underlying material appears to be present for that to gradually occur with extended bottle age."

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
