Perrières is the Meursault premier cru that behaves like a Grand Cru, and 2019 was a year Drouhin describes as excellent grapes in small quantities, giving wines that are gracious, delicate and fresh. The name refers to stony ground, and that is what the site is: Drouhin describes the soil as poor, with outcrops of dry, chalky rock. That is why this cru is tighter and more mineral than you'd expect if you know Meursault for buttery generosity. For this bottling the house works as a négociant. The fruit comes from supply partners who farm to Drouhin's specifications, and it is picked by hand and sorted where needed. The cellar work is light: slow pneumatic pressing, the last pressings kept apart from the free-run juice, then 16 to 18 months of ageing in French oak barrels, only 20 to 25% of them new. Drouhin says the wine drinks best between eight and twenty years, so it pays to be patient. Serve it at 13°C, not colder.

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled or poached Dover sole, shellfish cooked in court-bouillon, lobster or scallops with beurre blanc, chicken in a morel cream sauce, or an aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the tighter, more mineral side of Meursault: lemon, white peach and green apple over a stony, chalky core, with a light touch of hazelnut and toast from mostly older French oak. Medium-to-full bodied but taut, with firm acidity and a long, saline finish. Think closer to Puligny-Montrachet's precision than buttery Meursault richness, and built to age.
