Clos Sorbè is the odd premier cru whose vines sit in the middle of Morey-Saint-Denis itself, walled in among the houses rather than out on the open slope, on a gradual east-facing rise of chalky marl studded with broken white limestone. That stony marl gives a Morey with more lift and less brawn than the village's reputation would suggest, and Drouhin plays it straight: 2005 was the Côte de Nuits' great modern vintage — dry, warm, flawless fruit, tannins built for the long haul — and for years these wines stayed locked up. Twenty-one years on, this one has finally shed its structure and moved into the mature register of sous-bois, dried rose and truffle. From a private cellar and ready now, though a well-kept bottle still has years in front of it.

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
