The 2019 Joseph Roty Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a stunning expression of Pinot Noir, showcasing the elegance, intensity, and complexity of one of Burgundy’s most coveted Grand Cru vineyards. Domaine Joseph Roty, renowned for its old-vine expertise and meticulous winemaking, crafts this wine from a tiny, legendary parcel within Griottes-Chambertin. Known for its deep clay-limestone soils and proximity to Chambertin, Griottes produces wines of profound depth and silky refinement.

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections. The nose is beautifully perfumed and layered, offering aromas of ripe black cherries, wild strawberries, and dark plums, complemented by floral notes of violets and rose petals. Subtle hints of forest floor, truffle, and warm spices like clove and cinnamon add complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and seamlessly textured, with fine, velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity providing structure and balance. The flavors are concentrated and harmonious, showcasing lush red and dark fruits, savory herbs, and a fine mineral core, culminating in a long, elegant finish with lingering notes of spice and earth.

The 2019 vintage, with its warm and even growing season, imparts this wine with ripe, concentrated fruit and a lush yet balanced profile. This Grand Cru pairs beautifully with roasted duck, venison, or braised beef, and it complements rich truffle-infused dishes and aged cheeses perfectly. While approachable now for its aromatic complexity and polished tannins, this Griottes-Chambertin has the structure and depth to evolve gracefully over the next 15–20 years, revealing additional layers of nuance and sophistication.

Joseph Roty’s Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and terroir, offering a seamless blend of intensity, elegance, and age-worthy potential—a must-have for collectors and lovers of fine Burgundy.

"A notably cool and more elegant, as well as markedly spicy nose also features liqueur-like aromas of red cherry, black raspberry, cassis and subtle floral and warm earth hints. There is a polished mouthfeel to the delicious and nicely vibrant middle weight flavors that possess superb length and beautiful depth on the overtly austere built-to-age finish. This isn't as powerful as the Mazy but it's notably finer. Excellent."

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the one cuvée that flirted with excessive ripeness on the nose, revealing figgy aromas filtering through the black fruit and just missing the delineation of the Fonteny. The palate is balanced, though, and velvety-smooth; here there is less sign of the overripeness. In fact, the finish shows impressive clarity and refinement. Hopefully time in bottle will address the sur-maturité, so cellar this for several years." —Vinous

"The 2019 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is perfumed and sensual, bursting with aromas of plums, Indian spices, sweet red berries, anise and orange rind. Full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with a broad attack and a layered core of fruit, it's framed by melting tannins and succulent acids. This has turned out brilliantly. " —Robert Parker

More about Joseph Roty

Joseph Roty's family has been making wine since 1710, and today his sons Philippe and Pierre-Jean steward one of Burgundy's most coveted collections of old vines. Late picking, zero destemming, low-temperature fermentation—every choice is about extracting maximum complexity from ancient fruit. These are profound, age-worthy reds.
